Fencing Trends 2018

With the end of 2018 approaching fast it is always a worth while exercise having a look at which fencing panels and fencing designs have been popular throughout the season, so what has happened this year ?. Is it just the same old boring designs or are customers starting to think outside the box.

FencingFence

Bespoke Fencing Panel Designs

Something that i have noticed happening more and more this year is that the fencing companies are starting to design their own fencing panels as per the customers specification. Cedar along with tanalised planed timber is being used to manufacture horizontal wooden fence panels and it looks really good ( See below ).

This fence has been designed using 2 x 1 smooth finish tanalised timber. ( Tanalised timber is a term that is used to describe timber that has been pressure treated impregnated ). The work was carried out by Martin and the boys at Dekit. ( Give us a call if you require their details ).

Jasmin Decorative Fence Panel

This panel has become very popular this year with customers looking for something a bit different. The only problem with using Jasmin fence panels with a more intricate design is that they are a bit more complicated to cut down especially if you only need half a panel at the end of a run. However they are beautiful.

Garden FencingFencing Panel

Plastic Fencing Panels

This year we have also seen a slight increase in sales of Plastic and PVC Fencing. A number of customers are considering plastic as an alternative to the more traditional wooden fencing panels. Plastic panels will reduce the maintenance to virtually nothing except for a light clean once a year and again they look fantastic. The only downside with plastic fencing is that the colours and finishes are limited and also they are a lot more expensive.

Composite Decking Part 2

Composite Decking explained

If you have been researching plastic and composite decking you will be aware that there are a vast array of styles and finishes to choose from, all of which have their own unique set of characteristics and decking board finishes. In the first article the focus was on the hollow composite decking and the Trex Transcend decking board.

In this article we will look at the PVC Decking board and the Millboard deck board.

PVC Decking

Composite Decking

PVC Decking is a good alternative to old fashioned hollow composite decking. So why use PVC Decking ?

  • The main advantage of PVC Decking is that the expansion and contraction is far less than with the majority of hollow composite decking boards. There is nothing worse than walking on a composite deck that has 10mm gaps on the end join this looks unsightly and can also act as a dirt catcher.
  • PVC decking is Non Slip certified.
  • PVC Decking is generally class 1 fire rated.

Price

PVC Decking price can range any where from £48 per Metre Square to £66 per Metre square. ( Inc Vat )

Wide Plank PVC Decking board

Composite DeckPVC Decking

In the past Wide Pank PVC Decking boards have been used primarily on Caravan Parks and trailer homes, this is however starting to change with tha manufacturers beginning to introduce styles and finishes more suited to the domestic Market. This brand of Plastic Decking is produced using a high percentage of recycled material and comes with a full BS standard slip rating.

Price £54 per Square Metre. ( Inc Vat )

Millboard Decking

This product is a Premium decking board it is aesthetically on par with the Trex decking board that we have highlighted in previous articles. This board hosts a number of unique characteristics and offers an amazingly realistic alternative to wooden decking.

What makes millboard Special

  • Millboard composite decking looks like real wood
  • Millboard composite is soft under foot when walked on.
  • It is available in ten seperate finishes.
  • Millboard is fully anti-slip

Price

Millboard is by far the most expensive of the composite or wooden decking alternatives with the price coming in at an eye watering £96 Per Square Metre. ( Inc Vat ). This product must be seen to be fully appreciated.

Composite Decking explained

Plastic & Composite Decking the Pros and Cons

This article is based on our experience with the various Decking products that we have encountered. ( The article will be made up of two parts ). No brand names will be mentioned as this article is designed to be informative only.

Todays article will highlight Plastic Decking. Like any new product there are pros and cons to this particular type of decking however one thing is for sure and that is PVC, Composite and Plastic decking is becoming very popular.

With the subsequent increase in popularity of Composite Decking we have seen a vast array of manufacturers starting to produce various types of decking.

It reminds me very much of when laminate flooring first became popular, every man and his dog was selling it and it became a mine field when trying to source a product what was of a good quality and fit for purpose.

What Decking is available ?

There are a wide variety of plastic, PVC and composite decking products available but generally they come into four categories –

  1. Hollow Composite Decking.
  2. Solid Composite Decking.
  3. PVC Decking.
  4. Resin & Mineral Stone Decking.

Hollow Composite Decking

Hollow composite Deck

We first came across Hollow composite Decking in 2010 at the time it was considered state of the art as it was a low maintenance alternative to traditional Wooden decking. This product proved to be very popular.

The advantages of hollow composite

  • Low maintenance.
  • Splinter Free
  • Low Slip
  • 10 Year Guarantee

As you can see there were a number of unique selling points however there was one characteristic of this particular type of decking that caused a few issues –

Expansion & Contraction

The expansion on this particular type of hollow composite decking was vastly more than any other decking product that we had come across.

This made it very difficult to finish and also caused issues when installing Decking handrails. We always advised customers to ask for guidance from the manufacturers regarding expansion and contraction when purchasing this particular type of composite decking.

Price

Hollow composite decking is generally the most cost effective of the Low maintenance decking boards with prices ranging from £5.00 Per Linear Metre to £8.00 Per Linear Metre. ( Based on a 145mm Board ).

Solid Composite Decking

Composite DeckingSolid Composite Decking

We first encountered Solid Composite Decking in 2014. To us this product made sense as it appeared to show less expansion and contraction and the designs were a lot more pleasing to the eye. The product that we introduced had been supplied to the American market for over 20 years and had therefore been tried and tested.

The product was manufactured using plastic and timber scrap that would have been heading for landfill, this particular brand of decking is produced using 95% recycled timber & Plastic.

 Solid Composite Decking

  • Wont fade or split
  • Low maintenance
  • Low Slip rating.
  • Resists Staining & Scratching
  • 95% Recycled material

The feedback on solid composite Decking has been really positive we supply a very good tried and tested solid composite board and have received no issues or negative feedback. It is however important to adhere to the manufacturers fitting instructions.

Price

Solid Composite decking is generally more expensive than hollow composite decking with prices ranging from £7.00 Per Linear Metre to £12.00 Per Linear Metre. ( Based on a 145mm Board ).

In the next article i will concentrate on PVC Decking & Resin Mineral stone Decking.

Composite & PVC Decking Designs for the Summer Season

Composite Decking Design installed by our customers in 2017 - 2018

With Summer upon us I have decided to put together images of Decking projects that have been installed throughout 2017 – 2018.

It is surprising what you can do with the various different decking products that are now available all it takes is a quality tradesman and a good eye for garden design.

1. PVC Decking

PVC Decking

This is a PVC Decking board cut and designed in a hexagonal shape the colour is Graphite it has a 20 year warranty and is fully anti-slip. It is more expensive than conventional wooden decking boards however from a maintenance viewpoint all that is required is a clean off and wash at the beginning of the season. This decking board option is the cheapest in our range don’t be put off as it is a really good quality PVC decking board.

2. Trex Decking

Trex DeckingComposite Deck

The next product that we are highlighting is Trex with a boarder of Tiki torch with a Spiced Rum decking board inserted in to the centre. There are also lights inserted on the perimeter of the decking board I have to be honest this deck looks amazing. These composite decking boards are available in Solid & Tongue and grooved and are fitted using a hidden clip, also available in this board is a unique circular bending option. From a cost point of view Trex decking is somewhere in the middle.

3. Millboard Decking

Wooden Decking

This is a vintage Oak millboard decking board design. The board is staggered so that waste isn’t an issue. This product is screwed to the frame where the head of the screw is closed over by the unique make up of the board. Millboard is a premium product it is beautiful however it does come at a cost this composite board is the most expensive board that you are likely to come across.

4. Timeless Timber Decking

Millboard Decking

Still a firm favourite with a lot of our customers is wooden decking. Yes you do have to stay on top of wooden decking from a maintenance point of view however the cost of wooden decking is far less than the composite and PVC alternatives. This Decking shows what can be done with a Sunburst panel and a wooden Timeless decking board.

If you require any further information on Composite or Wooden decking give us a call on Swansea( 01792 ) 884828 or visit our decking design and display centre at our Swansea South Wales Depot. We also offer a Decking design service where we can work out your decking plan for you just bring it in to us and let us do the rest.

D G Heath New Composite Decking

New Composite Decking Boards 2018

Its been a long winter one which we will be glad to see coming to an end with this in mind we have been preparing new decking products to launch for Spring 2018, generally throughout the winter months I spend a large portion of my time looking at new products & current trends along with contacting all of our suppliers to see if there are any new innovative design ideas that will improve our ranges in 2018.

Trex Torino Brown Decking

Trex Composite Decking

Building on the success that we had with Trex Composite decking in 2017 we have decided to increase our Composite decking range to include Trex contour Torino brown we will be stocking in a Tongue and Grooved and a solid Design deck board. This range is slightly cheaper than the Transcend range that we currently stock and is currently available in 3.66 Metre Lengths

Trex Contour Torino brown ( Product specification )

Product Specification

  • Thickness 25mm
  • Width 140mm
  • Length 3.66 Metre
  • Nominal Size

Advantages of composite Decking

  • Low Slip Rating
  • Low maintenance
  • Easy to maintain
  • 10 Year Commercial warranty
  • 25 Year Residential Warranty
  • Resistant to Fade, Stain, Rot & Splitting

Composite decking so far

As a whole in 2017 the feedback has been really positive on composite decking, the new designs are proving really popular and we hope to be able to build on last years sales. If I am forced to find negative in the product it would be that it is far more expensive that conventional decking. Also customers have to understand that it is a manufactured plastic decking product so even though it looks really good it will never be able to completely replicate solid wood.

What customers love about Composite & PVC Decking

There are two main reasons why customers are purchasing composite decking rather than traditional wooden decking the first is that composite decking requires very little maintenance and secondly composite decking generally isn’t as slippery when it is wet.

For further information on a wide range of composite decking products visit our extensive Composite Decking display area in Pontardulais Swansea South Wales. Alternatively visit our Website at www.dgheath.co.uk or call our dedicated sales team on Swansea 01792 8848287.

Timber yard

Following on from last weeks article on Timber grades.

Todays article will focus on joinery grade timber sold in the majority of wood merchants, So What is joinery timber ?

To put it in easily understandable terms joinery timber is classed as a timber that is suitable for Internal jobs these can range from Furniture making, Skirting boarding to shelving to Stairs, basically any application that requires timber to be installed internally to a stable high class finish.

The most common joinery grade timber used in the Uk is a softwood referred to as European Redwood or Scots pine, this wood is imported from Scandinavian or the Baltic states and is native to  countries such as Finland, Sweden and Russia.

Unsorted Redwood Timber

Unsorted or best redwood as it is sometimes referred too is used in high quality joinery work where a defect free finish is required, this wood is generally referred to as free from defects, Unsorted timber will still contain knots and minimal shakes especially in thicker boards. As a rule you will find that this is the highest grade of softwood on offer in the majority of local timber merchants.

joinery timber

5th Scandinavian Redwood Timber

A fifth grade is also available this is by far the most common grade, you will find the majority of household products such as Pine Skirting board, Pine stair parts and Door linings will be manufactured using fifth grade Scandinavian redwood.

Uk Timber

6th Grade Redwood

6th grade redwood is a joinery timber it doesn’t tend to be so popular and it can contain larger dead knots widely used for price sensitive economy grade jobs.

Kiln Dried joinery grade Hardwood Timber

Another species of wood that has gained in popularity over the past 10 years is Oak timber. There are two species of Oak these are European and American White Oak. So what are the main differences between European & American white Oak ?

  • The obvious difference is that European Oak is native to America whereas American Oak is native to Europe.
  • European Oak will have tighter grain and growth rings.
  • European Oak will be lighter in colour and have a wider tone variation from plank to plank.
  • European Oak will have more of a wavy grain pattern where as American Oak is a lot more uniformed in its appearance
  • European Oak is more stable.
  • European Oak will last longer when used externally.

When using timber it is always worth giving a local timber merchant or builders merchant a call to advise on the most suitable timber for the task at hand always ask information on sourcing and quality as this will reduce the risk of problems in the future.

For further information on a wide range of joinery grade timbers visit our timber yard in Pontardulais Swansea South Wales. Alternatively visit our Website at www.dgheath.co.uk or call our dedicated sales team on Swansea 01792 8848287. Timber Merchants South Wales

Timber is available in a wide range of different species and grades and can be used in all sorts of building and maintenance applications, however it is important to make sure that you use the correct timber for the specified job. In this article I have compiled a list of our most popular grades of softwood timber along with the most common uses.

The Wood that we have focused on in todays article is referred to as carcassing timber this is available either graded or ungraded and can be used in structural applications ranging from roof battons to floor joists to studwork to partitioned walls .

What is timber grading

Timber grading is an assessment that is made of the structural strength and integrity of the timber. Key criteria when assessing grades of wood are splits, knot size and overall frequency of knots.

Graded Softwood

“Graded “ this means that the timber has usually been kiln dried to improve overall stability, it will also have been selected using the grading process either manually ( By human eye ) or on a production line as is commonly the case these days. Graded timber can be used for any job where structural integrity is important. EG House building, Decking, shop fitting etc. There are two types of graded Softwood.

C16 Softwood

pressure treated timbertimber wood

C16 softwood timber allows for defects that may reduce the strength of the wood, areas focused on are grain changes as well as wane ( Bark ) you will also tend to see a lot more blue sap stains. This is by far the most commonly used timber in the UK and is also a very cost effective option.

C24 Graded timber

timber prices

C24 timber has fewer inconsistencies and defects than C16 timber the wooden boards will look a lot more uniform in appearance. C24 timber will generally be used for specific jobs usually architect lead. C24 timbers are generally reserved for projects such as balconies bridges and other applications where a wider rafter centre is required. C24 timber is often specified by architect lead jobs as this will cover them for all eventualities.

Ungraded pine Softwood Timber

Ungraded wood is generally the lowest grade it is the most favourably priced timber option and is readily available. Ungraded softwood can be sold pressure treated or untreated and is commonly used in fencing garden maintenance and general low load bearing applications. This grade of timber isn’t kiln dried and can therefore be prone to movement whilst the drying process is occurring.

Always secure ungraded timber or it will move

If you are thinking of using ungraded timber secure it in situ and try not to leave it lying around without fixing it as otherwise it will be prone to warping and splitting.

In the next article i will discuss the Joinery or furniture grade Redwood & Oak timber options that are available.

For further information on a wide range of timber joists visit our timber yard in Pontardulais Swansea South Wales. Alternatively visit our Website at www.dgheath.co.uk or call our dedicated sales team on Swansea 01792 8848287. Feather Edged Fencing Vs Standard Fence panels

Feather Edged Fencing Design

With the end of winter approaching we are beginning to see customers starting to think about jobs in the garden that need doing. The weather at the start of 2018 has been pretty unpleasant with high winds and torrential rain which has lead to a number of garden fence panels coming down.

We are continually being asked for cost effective stronger alternatives to your standard budget fence panels. It is true if you decide to purchase wooden waney fence panels then you are likely to be replacing them within 5-6 years.

So what is the most cost effective durable option to replace old wooden fencing panels

The advice that I tend to give to customers is only purchase standard fence panels if you have to, if you do decide that this is the way to go then here are a few pointers –

  • Check that the panels have a minimum of five battons either side. ( For added strength )
  • Make sure that the fence panels are treated / tantalised.
  • Make sure that the fence panels have a weathered top ( Triangular ).
  • Make sure that the panels have sufficient fixings.

When fitting garden Fence Panels

  • Use fencing clips
  • Preserve Panels regularly with an oil based treatment.
  • Keep them up of the floor by roughly 10-20mm.
  • Secure Posts firmly in the ground roughly 600mm to ensure no movement.

Remember standard wooden fence panels will not last longer than 10 years.

So what is the best alternative wooden fencing system and does it look nice

When asked this question I will always try to guide customers in the right direction and I would advise them to have a look at installing a Feather edge fence system. If installed without out much planning they can look a bit industrial however fitted correctly I think aesthetically they are on par if not nicer than a traditional wooden fence. Here are a few examples of feather edge fencing that our customers have erected ( See below ).

Feather Edge fencingFence Panels

Fence boardPicket Fence

Feather edged fencing is produced using the individual pieces of timber rather that buying a prefabricated panel it is installed on site in situ and can be designed to meet the individual garden dimensions.

How cost effective is feather edge fencing

The cost of the materials used to produce a featheredge fence is similar to that of purchasing your panels. The only inconvenience with featheredge fencing is the labour that goes into attaching the individual boards to the timber cross rails this is due to the way that it is constructed. Long term the advantages in the lifespan will far outweigh that of a Standard panel.

So to put it in a nut shell feather edge is the way to go if you are looking for a cheap strong alternative to wooden fence panels.

Revamping your tired looking stairs in the home

When carrying out any work on the house the three key considerations which home owners tend to prioritise are aesthetics, price and inconvenience. You dont always have to completely demolish your living area to hit the target budget as quite often with a little bit of thought you can achieve what you are looking for within a reasonable budget and without making too much mess. One house renovation project where this is quite often the case is on wooden stairs and banisters.

What was fashionable in stair design back in the day

As with many areas of interior designs things change, what was once fashionable on stairs in the 1930s is now quite often considered dated and aesthetically inept not to mention completely impractical and unsafe. ( See below )

Stair railingbanister rail

We have all come accross stairs that look like this so what can be done to bring them back to life without destroying your home. Quite often customers initial thoughts are to rip the whole stairs out  and start again however there are other alternatives.

Why not

  • Keep the Newell posts
  • Keep the stairs and the treads.
  • Keep the main frame of the stairs
  • Keep the stair stringer

Tips on revamping your stairs

With the reintroduction of wooden flooring back into the home in the early 1990s the most popular wooden floor of choice has been Oak . With this in mind why not change the old white chipped or red hardwood handrail for Oak handrail  also its worth thinking about changing the spindles to an Oak, Metal or a glass design. This will give the stairs the lift or the revamp that is needed without the expense and inconvenience of ripping it out, it is also worth noting that Oak & Pine stair banisters match really well when painted white so even if you have the most hideous colour of wood on your stairs why not paint it or over clad it this will usually give a far more up to date desirable finish.

Oak handrailmetal stair spindles

I have come up with a couple Ideas that have been used by customers in the past and have worked

  • Paint or over clad the Stair supporting Newell Posts
  • Paint the or over clad the stair stringer
  • Change the stair handrail and swap for a more desirable choice of wood or metal.
  • Change the stair spindles, again wooden spindles or metal spindles are readily available.
  • Change the post Caps.
  • Clad over the stair treads.

Another really good product that we have recently started to use is a kit that is specifically designed to cover the part of the stairs that you walk on ( Treads ).

Door Designs for 2018

                                     Grey Door                       Grey internal Door

2017 was a busy time for us on doors with the introduction of a number of new ranges and product designs. We have noticed that door styles are beginning to change to correspond with new interior décors.

Whilst still sticking with wooden doors customers are now looking at subtle differences to natural wood or white doors. This has lead to the introduction of several shades of grey, Walnut and Wenge.

Interior Doors with a difference

What is  different about these doors is that they offer the natural beauty of wood grain with a contemporary smooth primed finish.

  • Doors come standard prefinished.
  • can be installed immediately.
  • Laminated improving door stability
  • Higher level of durability.
  • No variation in colour or shade.
  • Easy Clean surface.

An interesting factor with this collection is that the doors can be made to measure so that if you require a non standard sized door we can get it made to specification. However it is also worth noting that there is a 12 week lead time on all made to measure door ranges.

How do the contemporary grey doors compare in price ?

The cost of the grey doors is comparable to that of a good quality Oak door ranging anywhere from £130 to £180. Our internal Oak grey door collections are modern and current offering a door with a bit of a difference.
